hello, I’m italic.

My given name is Anthony. Marostica is my last name, and that comes from a city in Italy, North of Florence, where they hold a cherry festival each year and host a life-sized chess board in a castle.

My grand-father Rudolpho Vastisto Marostica was proud of his heritage, I’m proud of him and his legacy, as well as our shared story and heritage.

The first printing press I purchased was a Craigslist score for $300 in Portland, Oregon in late 2010. It is still one of the most publicly-accessible presses in the shop. I have since acquired over two-dozen presses and enough press sundries to outfit several shops.

Very quickly I noticed that wood type is rare and valuable. This started a path toward making my own wood type, and learning as much as I could about the traditions and lost arts involved in making it. See the gallery page for examples.
